FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Living in fear with nowhere to turn. That’s the reality millions of domestic violence victims face everyday.

The Center for Nonviolence and the creators of a new documentary are bringing awareness to this cause.

“Domestic violence is real, it happens to one in three women in this country every nine seconds,” said Olivia Klaus, Director/Producer of “Sin by Silence.”

Olivia Klaus is the director and producer of “Sin by Silence.” Klaus is not a victim herself, rather the friend of a victim.

“It completely shattered me, I had no idea what to do, and I started on this journey to find the answers,” said Klaus.

Now she’s providing the answers for millions of victims. Her documentary is a powerful look into the lives of women who are domestic violence’s worst victims.

Women who have killed their abusive husbands.

“Their stories, and their tragedy provide us the opportunity to learn about the warning signs,” said Klaus.

Friday night, Fort Wayne got a look at “Sin by Silence,” and they heard from its inspiration.

“My husband said to me, I want your wedding rings, and I said why you don’t care about them, and he said because without them they won’t be able to identify your body tomorrow,” said Brenda Clubine, a domestic violence victim.

Brenda Clubine had her Mr. Right, little did she know he was also her Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.

To see the light of day one more time, she said she had to kill her husband in self defense.

“He meant when he said he was going to kill me he was going to do it,” said Clubine.

Brenda spent 26 years in prison. During that time she created the group, “Convicted Women Against Abuse.”

“I said you know we need a place where we can heal, where we can grow, and yet still be there for each other,” said Clubine.

Brenda changed laws which ultimately led to her release in 2008. Her story has touched thousands, but she continues to devote her life to the cause.

“Get out, it’s not going to get any better, they can’t change them,” said Clubine.

Four million women die every year from domestic violence.
