I was mentally abused by an alcoholic husband and so was my son.
I had to get a restraining order because I had a sawed off shotgun pointed at me while I was laying in bed and also met a 357 when I got home from work one day. The Judge did not believe me and my lawyer turned on me at the hearing. I lost my
son to his alcoholic father that drove him to school and everywhere else and he had a pending DUI while in divorce court! The system failed me in TN. I was told by an officer that I was going to be a statistic if I didn't take action. I did, but the system failed me in Winchester, TN. The Judge was partial to the famous Louvin sitting in his court room. I didn't stand a chance!!

A nurse no criminal history and I got my husband off my son and ran to the neighbors by waving a gun to clear a path. He took the gun no one shot. Told by the police not to bother them when I called for help before. Psych evals, prior calls for help, emergency d.v. court eval, not admitted. Neighbors, roommates, character witnesses not allowed. I am a convicted double striker as if I were some gang banger. 13 judges passed me around between the different court systems. I have survived my husband, prison, homelessness ...but will my baby survive without me? I was able to get job and help about 50 others get jobs this last year. I cannot get off probation until I am divorced and I cannot leave to a safer county until I am off probation. If I am out of the area I will feel safe enough fight for my son. I have job and I have helped approx 50 others get jobs. I can pay in small amounts a trustworthy lawyer to stand up to Orange County. Do you know one I can trust? My husband has our son, house, cars, boat, retirement and his nursing license.

I was married to an alcoholic abuser for more than 40 years. In his final attack on me,he broke a bone in my hand ,left an enormous bruise on my arm and half strangled me.He told the police that I was mentally unstable and violent, and had received my injuries when he tried to restrain me.They believed him and he avoided any form of punishment.I wonder what would have happened had I defended myself,as I was tempted to do,by killing him.Would I have been jailed for life?.As it turned out,he continued his abuse and when I reported him again, the police refused to respond, because of,'medical issues'.

I by chance to find your documentary this evening. I was in prison for 19 months...not for domestic violence per se, but in an effort to avoid 'another night', I had to enable my then husband's drug addiction and add refills to the prescription for Vicodin I got from the emergency room because of injuries from a 'bad' night. He told me to alter the prescription-I had no choice...or else. I know many women in prison who are there for life or decades because they finally 'stood up for themselves' and killed their husbands. Life sentences regardless of the long list of 911 calls from the neighbors, calls they made themselves, emergency room visits ad infinium. The amazing thing? men generally get sentences of 10 years or lower because their crime murdering their wives was a 'CRIME OF PASSION' but that law does not extend to the BATTERED WOMEN.!!! I am in Texas, and it is especially harsh on the women. Please, direct me wherever I need to go to aid and free these women from the second prison they are in-yet finally feel free.

Hi, Jessica. Yes, it was devastating news that the Governor decided to reverse the parole decision. California is 1 of 3 states that still allows the Governor the right to reverse a parole suitability. But, we are doing everything we can working on new legislation to help release the remaining Convicted Women Against Abuse. So, make sure to keep checking our blog and even join us at http://www.Facebook.com/SinBySilence to receive updates on the actions you can help take to bring justice to these incredible survivors who remain trapped behind bars!

Thanks so much,
The Sin by Silence Team

My husband of 20 years is an expert button-pusher. He picked a fight. I got arrested for defending myself. I spent 3 days in jail [my worst nightmare], bailed out, and pleaded no contest. [Although I could've called several witnesses to describe how he has repeatedly picked fights with them as well. But if I lost the case I'd do a year or more in prison. I couldn't risk that.] So, I'm on 3 years' informal probation, paying heavy fines & fees, plus 40hrs community service [Habitat for Humanity ReStore], and a year of Domestic Violence classes. We watched your video in today's meeting. Your message is clear: Get OUT. I will add that the "Law" will not protect victims of abuse- especially verbal/psychological abuse, where wounds and scars do not show. I can defend myself physically [and get arrested for it?!] but I can't defend myself emotionally/mentally.

I got a letter from Joanne the other day and was frustrated to hear that the governor took away her parole. Can he just do that? It doesn't seem fair. What are her chances now and when can she maybe have another chance?
